About Us
The Scottish Prison Service is an Executive Agency of the Scottish Government, responsible for managing 17 prisons across Scotland and employing over 4,600 staff. Our mission is to protect the public and reduce reoffending by supporting positive change in those in our care.
We are committed to ensuring dignity, compassion and transparency in all that we do—particularly when a person in our custody dies. DIPLAR is our internal review process that allows for careful reflection and learning following each death, with a focus on the impact on staff, those in custody, families, and the wider organisation.
The Role
As an Independent DIPLAR Chair, you will play a critical leadership role in facilitating these sensitive, complex reviews. Your primary responsibility will be to guide the DIPLAR process, ensuring open, inclusive and trauma-informed dialogue, and helping to identify actionable learning points for improvement.
Working closely with SPS establishments, NHS partners and SPS HQ DIPLAR Caseworkers, you will ensure the DIPLAR process is completed in accordance with national guidance and within set timescales. Your impartiality and professionalism will be key in creating a safe space for reflection, challenge and learning.
