The University of Strathclyde is a leading international technological university, focused on delivering excellent teaching and world-class research and known for forging strong collaborative links with industry, government, business and the third sector.
We have achieved significant success through the realisation of our distinctive ‘triple helix approach’– the coming together of academia, business and industry, and the government and public sector, in common cause – and a determination to make a significant difference for our students, the economy and wider society. At Strathclyde, we are committed to redefining the role of universities in industrial collaboration to support sustainable economic growth, and to deliver wider societal benefit by fully exploiting the impact of our research and knowledge. The existence of a supportive innovation ecosystem is crucial in guiding and developing technologies on the journey from new research to commercial application. At Strathclyde, this is provided by the expertise within our Departments, Schools and Faculties, and crucially through our industry facing Centres which work collaboratively with industrial partners.
The Director of Innovation and Industry Engagement will be responsible for leading relevant professional services in delivering key strategic areas for the University, working with colleagues across the university and with external organisations. The areas of focus will include:
The Director of Innovation and Industry Engagement will lead the delivery of the Entrepreneurship Strategy, Strathclyde Inspire across the University and with external organisations providing high level and strategic leadership to ensure the further inculcation of an entrepreneurial environment and mindset within the University. The role will also have responsibility for representing the University externally (regionally, nationally and internationally) in promoting the quality and value of Strathclyde’s entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem offering, assisting with building the University’s profile and reputation.
The role will lead the development of TIC Zone, working across all partners and stakeholders to grow the international reputation and standing of the TIC Zone as a “centre of knowledge transfer excellence” in its key technology platforms and clusters. Working closely with the CCO and University industrial centres, the postholder will develop and implement the University’s industry engagement strategy with the focus on growing the number of new relationships across SMEs and Tier One partners. You will also develop the impact management framework to demonstrate the impact of the University’s work and a triage process for new relationships to ensure a smooth user journey.
The Director of Innovation and Industry Engagement would be expected to have a good relevant degree or professional qualification with evidence of ongoing continuous professional development. Membership of a relevant professional association would be desirable. We are looking for evidence of substantial strong and motivational management and leadership experience in driving innovation and commercial growth, leading multi-disciplinary teams while managing and enhancing complex stakeholder relations. The ideal candidate will need to have an engaging personal style, with the credibility and gravitas to work collaboratively, while fostering relationships and influencing a broad range of internal and external partners.
