University of Edinburgh
Deputy Director Specialist Safety Advisory Services
Edinburgh
£56,048 – £66,890

At the University of Edinburgh, we’ve had an extraordinary influence on the world for more than 400 years. As an organisation underpinned by equality, diversity and inclusion we’ve been influenced ourselves, by lots of other ‘worlds’, different people, places, beliefs and ideas. It makes us who we are.

The University’s Health and Safety Department are now developing a new leadership team to shape and drive the organisation through a period of transformational change. There will be three new Deputy Directors: Deputy Director Health & Wellbeing, the Deputy Director of Core Services and Operational Management, and Deputy Director of Specialist Safety Advisory Services.  The Health & Safety department is responsible for leading change that will build on the existing safety, health and wellbeing management system, deliver continuous improvement and be well supported. Through this change the University will make measurable improvements with an observable positive impact for staff, students and visitors.

The role of Deputy Director, Specialist Services will be a critical role to the success of this, and it’s an exciting time to join the team. The leadership team will work on a thematic basis, each area with their portfolios, working collaboratively to shape and deliver the approach. In order to embed our commitment we will be working in partnership with the wider university community. This will enable you to drive, shape and support partnerships within each of the six management areas of the University.  Building successful and strong partnerships will be at the heart of what you do.

Educated to degree level in a science / engineering related discipline the successful candidate will also have a post-graduate qualification or equivalent.  Considerable experience of operating at a senior level in a diverse, complex organisation is essential as well as within an environment which is higher risk through biological, chemical or radiation work activity.  An open, supportive and visible management style and experience of supporting staff to create a healthy working environment is also key.  You should be able to demonstrate skills and experience in relation to providing advice to higher risk profile areas as well as those that will drive forward innovation and change.

Main responsibilities of the post:

  • Lead and be accountable for the development of the work programmes and staff performance.
  • Lead on the delivery of the content of the health and safety framework.
  • Effectively lead your team and connect to a network of competent H&S Managers and building strong relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate meaningful impact of the Specialist Safety Services key programmes of work.
  • Provide competent advise for the organisation taking the lead as a competent adviser where required.
