St Columba’s Hospice Care - Governor (Trustee)

Edinburgh - Non-remunerated

“I want people to know the Hospice has helped me to live well at home for as long as possible. All you need sometimes is to get away from the pressures of life. It’s a truly wonderful place.”

Ruth (40), living with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and receiving care and support from St Columba’s Hospice Care.

Do you want to make a real difference to the lives of people like Ruth living across Edinburgh and the Lothians and utilise your skills and experience for the better?

Make an impact on St Columba’s Hospice Care and become a Governor (Trustee) to our organisation.

Who we are:

St Columba’s Hospice Care is an independent Scottish Charity with a diverse and committed workforce (made up of approximately 231 staff and over 650 volunteers). We provide specialist care and support to people with life-limiting conditions and their families across Edinburgh and the Lothians. Last year, we made a difference to the lives of over 1100 people.

Our patients and their families rely on us to deliver outstanding care and support, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our aim through every interaction with an individual or a family, is to provide access to the resources and services they need, so that they can live as independently as possible for as long as they can. That’s why we put patients and their families at the heart of everything we do both in the Hospice and in the community.

What we are looking for:

Joining St Columba’s Hospice Care as a Governor has never come at a more exciting time. It’s unlikely you do not know someone touched by the support given or received at a local hospice and the valuable time of our Governors supports our strategic and operational growth to develop and deliver high quality hospice care across Edinburgh.

Our Governors give their time, experience, and skills to help St Columba’s Hospice Care deliver the very best in palliative care. They play a vital role and add value to the management team. A key part of this is making sure our strategic aims, objectives and direction is not only established and met but succeeded and developed. Ultimately, they realise that the more we can do, the more positive impact we can have on people’s lives and offer strategic guidance on how to get there.

Who you are:

We are looking for an individual to bring a dynamic and fresh approach to our Board. You’ll be an experienced, business focused professional, with commercial acumen and knowledge of business development. The following skills will be important for this role:

  • Passionate about St Columba’s Hospice Care and the work we do to support the people and families who use our services.
  • Strong relationship builder with corporate businesses.
  • Entrepreneurial flair or social enterprise experience.
  • Understanding of the complexities of legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities of trusteeship.
  • Knowledge of income generation.
  • Governance experience.

The logistics:

We operate out of our beautiful Edinburgh office on Boswall Road, overlooking the Forth in Leith. We are taking a hybrid approach to our Board meetings, so flexibility is key. Ideally, we would like to be all together and face to face but we also understand this can’t always be the case. General meetings are held quarterly, with two additional strategic meetings a year. Occasionally we also hold workshops for Board Members.
